About This Experience

Mount Paku rises suddenly above the small seaside town of Tairua on New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula. Although it is not a high mountain, its volcanic shape makes it stand out immediately, a compact green hill overlooking the coast and the blue waters of the Pacific. Before even starting the walk, however, we had one unexpected challenge: finding a parking spot in the area. The streets around the hill were busy and parking was limited, so it took us some time to find a suitable place to leave the car. Once that was solved, the walk to the top was short but surprisingly steep in places, climbing through quiet residential streets and then onto a narrow trail that winds between rocks and vegetation. With every few steps, the view became wider. Houses began to look smaller below, the harbor opened up, and long stretches of beach appeared along the coastline. Reaching the summit was the real reward. From the top, the panorama stretched in every direction, with white beaches, offshore islands, the town below, and the endless Pacific Ocean filling the horizon. It was the kind of place where you naturally stop for a while, not because the hike was long, but because there was so much to look at. The contrast between the small volcanic hill and the enormous landscape surrounding it made Mount Paku especially memorable. It may be a modest climb, but the views from the top make it feel much bigger than it really is.
