San Diego's Cliffside Coast
San Diego's Cliffside Coast, Tour, Beams of Light, USA, California
About This Experience
This scenic coastal area offers dramatic cliffs, sandy beaches, tide pools, ocean views, and beautiful walking paths. It is ideal for photography, especially on clear days with soft light, and for enjoying the coastline on foot. San Diego’s cliffside coast looked almost too perfect when we first arrived. The Pacific stretched endlessly toward the horizon, deep blue beneath the California sun, while golden sandstone cliffs dropped steeply toward narrow beaches and small coves far below. From above, everything seemed peaceful: surfers waited beyond the breaking waves, pelicans glided along the cliff edge and sea lions could occasionally be heard barking from the rocks. We followed the trail as it wound along the coast, stopping constantly because every bend seemed to reveal another view worth photographing. In places the path ran surprisingly close to the edge, with nothing between us and the ocean except crumbling sandstone and a very long way down. The cliffs here are beautiful, but they also have a slightly unsettling character. Layers of sandstone project outward in impossible shapes, and cracks run through sections that look solid until you notice how much of the cliff has already collapsed onto the beach below. Naturally, that made us want to explore them even more. We eventually found a narrow trail descending toward the water, twisting between rocks and patches of vegetation until the sound of the waves became much louder. At the bottom, the coast felt completely different. From above we had been looking down on the Pacific; now we were standing beneath enormous cliffs that towered above us like walls. Small caves and openings had been carved into the sandstone, and waves rushed into them before retreating with a deep hollow sound. We began walking along the base of the cliffs, timing our movements between the incoming waves. For a while it was easy. The water would surge forward, we would step back toward the rocks, and then we would continue as soon as it withdrew. But around one corner the beach narrowed almost completely. Ahead of us was a beautiful little cove that looked irresistible, but reaching it meant passing a rocky projection where the ocean came almost directly against the cliff. We watched several waves and convinced ourselves that there was enough time between them. As soon as one large wave retreated, we made our move. We hurried around the rocks, laughing as the water rushed away beneath our feet, and for a few seconds everything went exactly according to plan. Then we heard the sound behind us. A much larger wave was coming in. There was no time to go back and almost nowhere to move forward. We scrambled toward a slightly higher shelf of sandstone just as the wave crashed around the corner and exploded against the rocks. Water rushed around our legs with far more force than we had expected, soaking our shoes and trousers and leaving us clinging to the cliff while the Pacific tried its best to make the decision for us. For a moment all we could do was hold on and laugh at how quickly our carefully calculated plan had fallen apart. Then the water retreated, leaving everything strangely quiet again. The little cove we had been trying to reach was still there, looking as innocent and inviting as before. We continued, although from that point onward we treated the ocean with considerably more respect. The cove turned out to be worth the adventure. Sheltered between the cliffs, it felt completely separated from the city above. The sandstone glowed orange in the afternoon light, small tide pools reflected the sky and tiny crabs disappeared into cracks whenever we approached. Looking upward, we could barely see the people walking along the cliff-top trail. It was remarkable to think that one of California’s largest cities was only minutes away, while down here we seemed to have entered a completely different world of rock, water and seabirds. We stayed until the changing tide reminded us that our route back was slowly becoming less convenient. This time we waited much longer before crossing the narrow section. We watched the waves carefully, counted the intervals and chose our moment with considerably less confidence than before. When the water finally pulled far enough away, we hurried around the rocks and reached the wider beach without another Pacific ambush. Climbing back toward the cliff top was tiring, but every few minutes we stopped and looked behind us. From higher up, the cove that had seemed so enclosed gradually became just another small indentation along the enormous coastline. The waves that had felt powerful enough to sweep us away now looked like thin white lines breaking against the shore. By the time we reached the top, the late-afternoon light had transformed the cliffs. The sandstone had turned almost golden, long shadows stretched across the coves and the Pacific reflected the softer colours of the sky. We continued along the cliff edge until sunset, watching the sun slowly descend toward the horizon. It would have been easy to remember the tour simply for those spectacular views, but what remained strongest in our minds was that unexpected moment below the cliffs: the sound of the approaching wave, our desperate scramble onto the rocks and the realization that the calm blue ocean we had admired from above had a very different personality when encountered at sea level. San Diego’s coast had given us exactly what we had hoped for—beautiful cliffs, hidden coves, spectacular ocean views and, as usual, a little more adventure than we had planned.
